Kaila's Avant Garde

Oh my gosh, I am so obsessed with Kaila's avant garde film. The way she captured the mirrors was amazing! I've noticed that everything she makes is so different and very experimental, but it looks wonderful. I really like the way she changed it from color to black and white, because it really makes the audience concentrate on the visuals and the set-up of each shot rather than be distracted with colors. Visually, it was very well shot; I could tell she really knew what she wanted to capture and really made it a point to get a certain look out of it. I can't remember what the idea she had behind it, or the message/thought/idea she wanted the audience to get from it, but if anything, I will take away her gorgeous filming style and creativity.

The Best Cabin in the Best Woods

Okay, so I saw this movie not recently but I loved it so much that I feel that I should blog about it anyways. If you've ever seen the trailers for this movie, it's literally the perfect set up and whoever thought of it should get their salary tripled. Originally I saw the trailer and thought "Oh, it's just another cliché horror movie, and a giant waste of money". Dismissing it completely, I never bothered to see it in theaters or even when it came out on Netflix. I remember overhearing conversations where people would rave about this movie, but I thought people were just not knowledgeable about film and didn't know what they were talking about. It didn't get to me until one day that I was on IMDB and I saw that this movie had 8/10 stars. This same movie that I literally thought wouldn't earn a dollar in the box office was actually leading it for a good 3 weeks straight. "That can't be right," I thought, and decided to just go ahead and watch the movie to see what all the commotion was about. Oh. My. God. Was. I. Wrong. This movie is definitely without a doubt one of the best horror films I've ever seen - and I've seen plenty. Basically it depicts a group of college kids going to a lakehouse for their break, and getting more than they bargained for. The first half hour seems exactly like a standard horror movie set-up, but after a little, you're introduced to a completely other component of the plot. Out of nowhere you realize that the computer geeks present at the beginning of the film actually had a purpose - they are controlling the game. Basically, these people work in a horror game...thing...and they control everything that happens to the four college kids during their stay at the lakehouse. After the kids pass a certain territory, they have to face exactly what the people controlling the game wish. It's weird though, because it'd not a game. You later realize that the people controlling everything are really there to pick sacrifices for an evil being that will take over the world and destroy everyone unless he gets his blood sacrifice from the players involved. It's up the America to get these blood sacrifices because the other countries with the same game are loosing, and if the monster doesn't get his blood, he will rise up and destroy everything. This whole plot is basically mocking the hell out of horror movies in the best way possible. It is nothing that I would have ever imagined it would turn out to be which is why it is the best horror movie I've ever seen There is so much more than I haven't even touched on, I just think you should really see it, regardless if you love or loathe horror flicks. This one takes the cake.

Avant Garde Treatment

So my avant-garde film is basically going to show the parallels between humans and animals.

- Wife walks into home in woods and sets purse down
- Greets husband, who is lazily reading on the "couch"
- Sees the home dirty and messed up and gets irritated
- pick up husbands pants and folds them
- they discuss their day, but the husband insensitively doesn't pay attention which makes the wife mad
- The two get in an argument
- Their argument is voiced-over with animal sounds and snarls and growls
- The husband leaves
- The wife is upset
- End

I might possibly change my idea because I don't really like it. For now, however, this is what I am going with.

Dog Pound....that's a sad movie right there.

So my friend and I decided to watch a random film on Netflix, and we stumbled upon Dog Pound. That was a good/bad choice. So the film itself was...I don't even know what to say. It was very VERY depressing. It just might be the most depressing movie I've ever seen. Seriously. It centers around 3 adolescent, troubled teens who get sent to a juvenile center: David for selling drugs, Angel for car theft, and the last one, Carlin, for assaulting a police officer. Well, the three are sent to a correctional facility for troubled teen boys, and the three soon learn the harsh, terrifying events that happen there. The other inmates are vicious; for example, a group of boys preyed on David's drug habits and falsely gave him "cocaine" (it was NOT cocaine) for absolutely no reason, and left him alone, crying in his cell, somewhat paralyzed until he gained strength to crawl his way to the door in order for a guard to see him. Carlin also gets his share of abuse when he gets jumped in his room by the same group of guys that took advantage of David (also for no reason). The guards at the center are almost worse than the inmates; they could care less about the welfare of the boys. Many of them look the other way at gang activity, and some of them add on to the abuse that the boys receive as well. The film is edited to look cold and bleak so it adds a lot to the mood of the story which is ultimately cold and bleak as well. I want to give a good synopsis of this film, but there is too much that happens that I can't even begin to form a coherent summary. I also don't want to ruin it for you because I really want you to see it. Not because it's good; it's alright, but not amazing or anything. It has a lot of unnecessary moments and the plot  is sort of scattered, but the emotions it evokes are crazy. I've never been so sad about a film before. I give it a 6/10 (it could have been way better honestly), but if you don't mind being emotionally and mentally toyed with, then be my guest and watch this movie. Just know that every time I even slightly think about this film, it hits hard. You're probably not going to feel the same after you see it. And If you like happy endings, this isn't the film for you. At all.

I wish I had a cousin Vinny

Okay, by default, anything Joe Pesci is fantastic to me; he himself makes everything he appears in perfect. Well, I recently saw My Cousin Vinny by Jonathan Lynn, and I've never laughed at genuine humor in so long. How the story goes is that two guys are stopping at a convenient store during a road trip, and once they leave, they're immediately arrested. Originally thinking they are being charged shoplifting, the two are extremely taken aback when they realize they are being falsely accused of murder. (Dun dun dun)  Seeing as they are in deep trouble, they realize that they need a lawyer to save them from the almost certain death penalty fate waiting for them. Once they find out they have a cousin who is actually a professional lawyer (and I use the term professional very lightly), they call him in. After meeting Vinny, they quickly realize that Vinny has no clue what he is doing - at all. Throughout the film, Vinny experiences ups and downs while trying to clear the name of his cousins, and at the end of the film, with the help of his somewhat ditzy girlfriend, they find the alibi that gets Vinny's cousins off the hook. This movie had such genuine humor (no fart jokes or cheap shots) so it really made me respect the writing. The acting was FANTASTIC (again, Joe Pesci is amazing) and the two cousins accused of murder were really great as well. What really impressed me was Marrisa Tomei. She was absolute GOLD (she played Vinny's very Italian girlfriend). She actually won an oscar for her performance in the film. Overall, I give it a 7.5/10 for sure, and I would definitely see it again. You should definitely go watch it (it's on Netflix).
